Ultram drug interactions

Drug interactions involve the alteration of effects delivered by the drugs and the increase of side effect risk. In order to avoid possible drug interactions with Ultram you should inform your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription and non-prescription medications you are using on a regular basis. Starting, ceasing or altering the dosage of any drug you are currently taking without your doctor's consent is strongly discouraged.

There are specific medications that are known to interact with Ultram, including painkiller medications, narcotic antagonists and especially MAO inhibitors. In case you've taken any MAO inhibitor in two weeks before or during the course of Ultram you risk experiencing severe and even fatal side effects.

Be very careful and inform your doctor about using substances that affect serotonin levels such as St. John's wort, antidepressants, lithium, dextromethorphan, street drugs, migraine drugs and others. By mixing these substances with Ultram you increase the risk of experiencing serotonin syndrome, which manifests through dizziness, hallucinations, hyperactivity, coordination problems and severe vomiting or nausea.

Some substances may affect the time Ultram takes to clear off from the system and prolong its effects. Such substances include quinidine, azole antifungals, HIV drugs, macrolide antibiotics, rifamycins, anti-seizure medications and other substances.
